Simply Scentsible Scholarship Fund

Staff, Simply Scentsible.com

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, August 2005/PRNewswire/

We have carefully thought about something that means a lot to us and wanted to let you know our thoughts.

We have decided because we are in business it is important for us to be able to give back to the community. With that in mind we have decided 3% of every order and $3.00 for every wick dipper sold, will go toward a scholarship fund we have set up for high school seniors. We have specific criteria - however, the main reason we decided to do this was so that the kids that are not at the very top of their class have a chance to get a scholarship. They still need good grades, volunteer time, community time, etc. Some of us have had children graduate from high school and still have kids in high school and have realized how difficult it is for the average student to get scholarships. It seems all the kids in the top 10% of their class are the lucky winners of all the scholarships. We wanted to recognize the kids that work just as hard, doing the same things as the other kids, but are not straight A students. And these are usually the kids that really need the extra money or they may not go to college. We wanted you to know we are trying to make a difference.

That is where you come in. Remember, for every order placed 3% will go toward our Simply Scentsible scholarship fund. Also, for every wick dipper sold, $3.00 will go toward the fund. You can help make a difference.

We will periodically inform you of how we are doing so you will know how all of us are making a difference in the lives of children.

As always, thank you,

The Staff at Simply Scentsible

How We Try To Save You Money

Staff, Simply Scentsible.com

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, January 2005/PRNewswire/

Many customers have asked us to let other people know what we do to try to save us money - which ultimately means our customers also save money.

We reuse shipping boxes if they are still in good condition. When we need to purchase boxes, we actually drive to the supply company instead of having them mail them to us. We also save most of the popcorn/peanuts (packing material) we get with our shipments. We try very hard to put our customers' orders in the smallest box possible without breaking anything! We always search for the best price for everything we buy with at least 3 different companies. One of our big things we are very proud of is we try to keep things as simple as possible - from our containers; which are lightweight to save on shipping costs - to our simple packaging of our soy candles and aroma animals. After all, it's the soy candle and the aroma animal we want you to remember, not the box it came in.

Candle Safety

Michele, Simply Scentsible.com

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, August 23/PRNewswire/

Ok … someone has to inform people about candle safety.  I hope you read this carefully as it could save your life!

I read in the newspaper, again, that two people were killed in a house fire.  The fire was caused by a burning candle.  We all know that you should NEVER leave a burning candle unattended but do you know the other “rules” about burning candles?  Some are listed below.  Please visit www.candle-safety.org to get the latest statistics about candle fires and how to prevent them.

  • Always remove all packaging material, including the labels on the bottom of candles and candle holders.
  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before you burn the candle.  This means that every time you light the candle make sure the wick is ¼ inch in height above the candle.
  • Do not move a burning candle as this can cause a fire and/or burns to your skin.
  • Do not let children or pets near burning candles.
  • Use an appropriate candleholder placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.  Always place a candle in a holder.  This way if it spills down the side the holder will catch the wax instead of your table, carpet, etc.
  • Place lighted candles at least 3 inches apart.
  • Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents and air currents.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.
  • Extinguish a candle if it smokes, flickers repeatedly, or the flame becomes too high.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris.  Do not do this while the candle is lit.
  • Discontinue burning candle when ½ inch wax remains.
  • Never touch or move a candle while it’s burning or when the wax is liquid.
  • Lighted candles should always be within sight.
  • Keep candles away from children and pets.
  • Keep track of the number of candles you have lit.  This way you will know how many you need to snuff out.  If it is dark, turn off all your lights and you will be able to tell if any candles are still lit.
  • If your power has gone out, use a flashlight.  If you use a candle for light, make sure all the rules above are being followed.
  • NEVER leave burning candles unattended.

Now I want to remind people of what not to do with a burning candle.  I have actually read where these things have happened to people.

  • Do not place a burning candle on any mattress, couch or chair.
  • Do not fall asleep while a candle is burning
  • Do not place a burning candle on a window ledge; it’s too close to drapes, curtains, blinds and the window itself.
  • Do not use your fingers to snuff out a candle.
  • Do not blow the candle out real hard as this can cause wax to splatter.  Use a wick dipper instead.
  • Do not place a burning candle in a child’s room.  Use an air freshener or an “Aroma Animal” for this purpose.  See www.SimplyScentsible.com for suggestions.
  • Do not place anything on top of a burning candle.
  • Do not try to get out of a tub after you have lit your candles.  Extinguish the candles first; then get out of the tub.
  • Do not use hairspray, or anything flammable, near a burning candle.
  • Do not blow dry your hair when a candle is near you or the dryer.
  • Do not try to light a candle if it is at the bottom of a deep container.  You can cause severe burns to your hands and face.  It would be best to throw it away.
  • Do not place candles on the floor.
  • Do not place candles on a clothes dryer, gas or electric.

I know this seems like a lot of “rules” but if you follow these easy steps you should be much safer.  Why am I telling you all of this?  We all love candles and the calming effects it has on us.  We just need to make sure we are using candles in a safe manner.  It saddens me when I read about a fire that was caused by a burning candle.  I would rather you not buy candles than take a risk of burning your home down.  If we all follow the safety guidelines mentioned above, you should still be able to enjoy your candles and keep your home safe.

If you have any suggestions or comments, please email me at Sales@SimplyScentsible.com.  I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have.

Why Soy?

Staff, SimplyScentsible.com

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, July 16/PRNewswire/

Candles made from soy wax do not emit the soot and fumes that are attributed to paraffin candles.  Paraffin is a petroleum byproduct of oil refining.  The soot from these materials can contain carcinogens, neurotoxins, and reproductive toxins.  Testing and air chamber analysis by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has found the following compounds, in significant quantity, in a random group of over 30 candles tested: acetone; benzene; trichlorofluoro-methane; carbon disulfide; butanone; trichloroethane; carbon tetrachloride carbon black (soot) particulate matter; trichloroethene; tetrachloro-ethene; tolulene; chloro-benzene; ethylbenzene; styrene; xylene; phenol; cresol; cyclopentene; and lead. Obviously you’d have to be a chemist to truly know what most of these chemicals are, but according to the EPA, they pose a health hazard with continued exposure over time.

You’ve done it a hundred times.  You buy a paraffin candle that smells nice, it’s colorful, the presentation is perfect…then you light it.  Within minutes, you can see the black residue rising from the lit wick, staining the jar or container from which these candles burn … and that’s just from the first time you light it.  Continued use of these paraffin candles will not only further blacken the jar or container it sits in - it can blacken your walls, ceilings, vents, AC units, heaters, curtains or blinds, and even carpets … and it’s not just dirt that stains your home.  Now, imagine that same soot being inhaled into your lungs.

With all of that being said - Soy candles provide a healthier choice than traditional paraffin candles.  Soy candles are non-toxic and burn clean. Simply Scentsible candles are made with 100% natural waxes and we use 100% cotton wicks. Our candles are made of soy wax which is a plant based product. Soy candles burn cooler which means they burn about 30 - 40% longer than traditional candles made of paraffin. That makes buying soy candles a better value for your money. Our candles are water soluble and the containers reusable – you can clean them effortlessly with soap and water. And, our soy candles are made here in America.

Here is something else to think about - If soy replaced just 10% of common paraffin wax, an estimated 60 million pounds of soybeans would be needed for annual candle production.  It also reduces our dependency on foreign oil.

Soy candles help the U.S. economy & farmers. The production and burning of soy wax candles can greatly benefit the American agricultural economy.

Want More Romance?

Staff, SimplyScentsible.com

CORAL SPRINGS, FL, June 28/PRNewswire/

Perhaps you never thought about buying candles that will help your significant other get in the mood.  Maybe now you should.  Michele Weston of Simply Scentsible asked us this question.  “Do you know what fragrances men like the most?”  Of course, we all said our favorite fragrances, such as Basil, Lavender & Mint, Clean Cotton and Grapefruit.  Michele said we weren’t even close.  Research has shown that the fragrances men are most attracted to are those associated with the kitchen and cooking. The aromas men most prefer are pumpkin, nutmeg, hazelnut, apple and cinnamon. Vanilla also ranks high on men’s lists. For a special evening, Michele suggests lighting a candle or two of vanilla, spiced apple, pumpkin spice or cinnamon.  “I think you will be surprised at the response.  Not only does lighting candles relax you, it also relaxes your significant other.”
